How to Build a Hydroponic Garden
Build a hydroponic garden
Steps
Decide what you want to grow.
Decide how many of each plant you want to grow.
Estimate the size of the area you will need for example a
combination of 66 cabbage & Silverbeet can be grown in 5 pipes of 4 inch
round and 3 metres long by 2 metres wide. The whole unit is therefore 6
metres square.
You will need to evenly mark and space 4 inch holes for the 4 inch
pots to be placed in them.
For this setup you will need a pump, home garden watering system
piping and a 100-150 litre drum to house the solution. Also a support
system to stand this setup on keep in mind the weight of about 100
kilograms or 200 pounds will be needing to be held once the system is
running.
For the first 3-4 weeks and in hot climates shade cloth is helpful
if used under these conditions.
Make up a hydroponic solution of fertilizers and water (or water gel
crystals) to a strength of an average of 20-24 CF with an end Ph of
5.5-6.5.
Plant your self raised or bought seedlings (see list of needed
items) by taking seedlings out of their pots and carefully washing away
most of the soil from the roots. (see tips)
Place the clean seedlings in the growing medium be it perlite
rockwool coir clay balls or NFT channelling and into the hydroponic
solution.
carefully control the chemical balance of nutrients to water (check
every day) by adding mostly water, this is due to the fact the water
will mostly evaporate.
watch your plants grow for about 12 - 18 weeks helping them out by
keep the pests away.
During this time you will need to keep an eye out for root rot which
is when the roots go slimy and turn brown and die.
Harvest as and when needed.
Flush the entire system after harvest and sterilise using peroxide
and copper solutions to kill bacteria and mold.
One other method
First, cut the handle off of one end of the trunk, then stand the thing up on
that end. Sitting it on a phone book with the door hanging off the end makes it
much easier to open and close.
Then install the fan... I put mine on the top of the box, but It could go in the
top back corner if light leakage is important. A good deal of light will be
exiting the fanhole (well, more than anywhere else)... keep this in mind. I also
painted the fan blades white in an attempt to reflect the light back into the
box, but I am not sure if it worked... it probably is not necessary.
Put some intake holes along the bottom of the box, these will be covered with
foil later, so not too much light will be leaking out.
Cover the entire inside of the box with foil, excluding the fan area, and where
you plan on installing the lamp. I used duct tape to affix it to the walls/door,
and I LEFT IT UNATTATCHED AT THE BOTTOM so air could come through the intake
holes.
Install the lamp! I put mine at the very top center of the door, with the bulb
sticking straight out, so it enters the rest of the box when the door is closed.
This made it easier to wire, but In the future, I would put it on the back wall
of the box, as less of your room will be illuminated when you open the thing
(it's kind of like opening up the sun).
Tips
You might want to buy a grower's guide from any of many websites
just by typing in "hydroponic growers guide" in the search box.
2 items of importance are a digital Ph tester and CF meter, these
are needed to check Ph and nutrient strength guessing is not enough.
Make sure you have plenty of time and energy
Hydroponic gardening can be done either inside or outside.
Just as gardens grown in the earth, it is better if you can have
lots of natural light like a greenhouse or sun room.
Gently rinse (don't scrub)"seedlings" roots to remove and loosen the
dirt before putting into the hydroponic solution. (Plants and roots at
this stage are fragile and are not needing every speck of dirt off of
them.)
