Saving at petrol pump

Research provided by ausis.info January 1994 to June 2006

While services like carpet cleaning and a few others are dropping prices or staying the same prices for fuel have headed skyward over the past few years seemingly with no end in sight. Gone it seems are the days of sales at the pumps, however there are a number of solutions you can try to minimise your fuel bill and maximise savings.

One valuable tip we discovered was try reducing the gap your spark plugs are set too, to the minimum they can be. A little known fact the petrol industry do not want you knowing is that ethanol (commonly know as metho) will clean your fuel and it burns cleaner so you get better economy. The main reason they do not want you knowing this is due to the fact they are currently making a fortune from you by selling you 200ml for $8 to $15 as a fuel cleaner. The plus side is you can buy it from the supermarkets for $8 for 4 litres. To use it you just find out how much petrol your putting in and work out what 5% is. This we found is the best for the first treatment or annualy normally we would use 2% of one tank a month.

Beware of paying by credit specially if you think your saving when using discount dockets.

You may be able to save with shopper dockets that is that if you bought $30 or more from somewhere else in goods you instantly get at least a 4-cent per litre discount docket for your petrol bill. Then by the use of certain credit cards that discount may increase or even double. What is the catch you ask? You need to be certain that the discount is genuine and that no fees are attached if you pay by credit. Recently we have seen warnings that many businesses will start charging extra for use of credit cards specially at service stations, many of whom often complain about the fact they have very little profit.

The number one rule we have found is to see if the petrol station offering supermarket-linked discounts in not charging more for its petrol as is the case with 2 garages round the corner from each other on Brisbane road Labrador. Two check that the petrol station does not charge extra for using your credit card. Many of whom are hiking the fees as high as $3 each transaction for customers who pay by any form of credit card. Filling up our Ford Falcon which only took (50 litres) last fuel up and we used an 8 cent per litre voucher you thought we would save $4 you would save around $4 also but alas we only saved $1. So make sure you ALWAYS ASK do not just assume as you cannot always see the signs IS THERE AN EXTRA CHARGE FOR USING CREDIT CARDS.

Refuel when you can afford it specially if prices are low, try not to be caught on empty.

Recently we found a cool site which outlines best deals on the internet. That site is MotorMouth www.motormouth.com.au. All you have to do is simply type in your postcode it shows the cheapest petrol in your area. Another website that has the low down on the petrol situation is the ACCC www.accc.gov.au. One tip the ACCC stated a number of times is that usually Tuesday to Thursday are cheapest for petrol prices. However recently it has been noticed by us that garages seem to like hijacking pensioners by targeting pension day to hike the prices at times up to 20%. A number of garage owners recently told us the price was governed by the stock market, and we just thought to ourselves there would be someone constantly changing the prices if that was the case. We felt that we could have probably got to Brisbane on that tank of hot gas we just got fed.

When driving THINK, ABOUT THESE FACTS.

We have found that driving smoothly i.e. not revving the engine out or dropping doughnuts, line locks etc can reduce fuel consumption by up to 48% alongside this fact you save also on tyres gearboxes and other items of wear and tear. If you visit RACQ and NRMA or any of the other motoring clubs you may be surprised what tips for reducing your petrol bill you can find. One such is if you reduce your speed by 10km Travelling at 90 km/h instead of 100 km/h decent roads you can reduce fuel usage by up to 15%. Taking any extra weight out of the car this includes roof racks off and taking anything that is not a necessity out can reduce fuel consumption by up to 5-9% in some cases more. Another interesting fact is washing your car completely this includes the underneath AND engine bay will increase engine performance by keeping it cooler and also decrease the drag therefore saving your precious petrol and in turn you HIP pocket.
